The pandemic has altered life as we know it, in some cases, for the better. Busy mum of four, Galway trainer, nutrition therapist, and women’s health expert Jess Keniston, has worked to make healthy living easier, whatever the restrictions.

Founded in 2005 by Brigitte Demay O'Carroll, the French Institute is well established as the place to learn French and experience the French culture in Galway. The institute operates from the Bridge Mills, an 18th century mill situated in the heart of Galway city. Traditionally offering in-person group and individual classes, the institute transitioned to online classes during the pandemic. This online offering proved to be successful and will be maintained, alongside in-person classes, as the institute prepares for the autumn season.

Over the past 10 months society has been swallowed up in this tsunami called Covid, and as everyone knows the students of the world have been locked away and forced into an impersonal, harsh, shadow of their reality. As one of the misfortunate students, I would like to share my experiences over the past two lockdowns.

I can still remember the moment I found out we were going into lockdown. I was at a hockey match in Sligo, one of the girls looked at her phone and said all schools are closed for two weeks. I was thrilled, two extra weeks off school! Other than the fact the Patrick’s Day disco was cancelled I was very happy with the unexpected break. Little did I know those days would turn into months and that almost a year later we’d be back in lockdown again.
